Krasnoyarsk is the largest industrial and cultural centre of Eastern and Central Siberia, and capital of Krasnoyarsk krai (territory), the second largest region in Russia. It was founded in 1628 by Cossacks at the confluence of the small River Kacha and the mighty Yenisei.

The city stands out for its unique landscapes and mountain views, majestic Siberian forest and Stolby Nature Reserve with a total area of 47 000 hectares. Meanwhile, it is a developed industrial center. The main industries are aerospace industry, ferrous metallurgy, machine building, wood processing, transportation, chemical, food, retail and wholesale services. Krasnoyarsk is also a large transport hub standing at the crossroads of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Yenisei River waterways. The main highlights include the Stolby State Nature Reserve – the hallmark of the city; the Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel – a historical and architectural monument and one of the symbols of Krasnoyarsk, shown on a ten rubles banknote along with the Communal Bridge over the Yenisei River; the Krasnoyarsk Bridge – a railway bridge over the Yenisei which was awarded the Grand Prix and Gold Medal of the World Exhibition in 1900 in Paris “For the architectural excellence and superior workmanship” along with the Eiffel Tower.

YENISEY RIVER CRUISES

The Yenisey River is one of the largest and longest rivers in Russia. It starts in the south of Siberia and flows all the way up north to the Arctic Ocean. Most of the places further of
the town of Yeniseisk have no roads and can be reached only by air all year round or by the river in the summer. It is possible to sail towards the north along the Yenisey, starting at
Krasnoyarsk. Another great option to see the Yenisey river are short hydrofoil boat trips that start in Krasnoyarsk downtown and end in Divnogorsk, a town by the Krasnoyarsk dam.
KARAULNAYA MOUNTAIN

This mountain is very well-known in Krasnoyarsk, and is one of Krasnoyarsk’s trademarks. It overlooks the city and you can see the entire bright and magical city from up there at night. There is a little church situated right on top of the mountain and a nice square with trees and benches. Newlyweds tend to come to this mountain as a love ritual of hanging padlocks around the area, a very common tradition in Russia.
KRASNOYARSK DAM

Krasnoyarsk Dam is a 124-metre high concrete gravity dam, located on the Yenisey River. It supplies power and is situated in a small town Divnogorsk. After it was built on the river, it
flooded the local villages and now there is, as the residents call it, the Krasnoyarsk sea. This is another landmark symbol of the region that is depicted on the 10-rouble note, along
with a church on the Karaulnaya Mountain.
