Novosibirsk

Overview

Sometimes called the capital of Siberia, Novosibirsk is Russia’s third largest city after Moscow and St. Petersburg, a modern, vibrant city, and a business, cultural, industrial, scientific, and trade center. During the Second World War, a large number of industrial enterprises were evacuated to Novosibirsk, and many of them stayed on in the city.

Novosobirsk is home to Akademgorodok, a world famous scientific center created in 1957 by decree of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. At the time, the Soviet people firmly believed in the infinite superiority of science and the exceptional mission of scholars. Akademgorodok was built 30 kilometers south of the city center, and is somewhat an equivalent of the Silicon Valley, sometimes being referred to as the “Silicon Forest” with the Novosibirsk State University, 35 research institutes, a medical academy, apartment buildings and houses, and a variety of community amenities including stores, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and cafés, cinemas, clubs and libraries located on its territory. Apart from Akademgorodok, the most visited attractions are: the Zoo,
the acclaimed Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater with its unique dome, large enough to fit the Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, and the Train Museum – an open-air exposition with the length of about 3km whose collection includes steam, diesel and electric locomotives, soviet motorcars, trucks and tractors.

  • THE STATE THEATER

Russia’s largest theater of the kind, this iconic venue is also known as “the Siberian Colosseum,” or the “Bolshoi of Siberia”, and is one of those places you have to see with your own
eyes to actually believe it could exist. Its hall seats 2,000 people and is large enough to house the entire Bolshoi Theatre under its dome. Guests come here to see classical opera and ballet performances and other entertainment events. Recent modernizations have made the theater the most technologically advanced one in Russia.

  • ALEXANDER NEVSKY CATHEDRAL

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral named after St. Alexander Nevsky. Constructed between 1896-1899, this Neo-Byzantine building was one of the
first ones in Novosibirsk to be made of stone. The Cathedral was shut down in 1937 in order to be demolished; however, the idea was abandoned, and the building was taken over by a documentary film studio, and then by a philharmonic hall. The Cathedral has eventually returned to its original function, and attracts tourists from all over the world.

  • RED AVENUE

The main street of the city passes through many famous attractions. It houses the terminal metro station – Zaeltsovskaya, as well as the central stations Ploshchad Lenina and
Krasny Prospekt. You can walk along from the beginning to the end and admire ancient buildings, including residential “stalinkas”, theaters, museums, universities. This is one of the
most equipped and beautiful highways of the city, which does not fall asleep for a minute. During the walk you can turn onto perpendicular streets – unusual courtyards and other sights are hidden on them. So, behind the House of Life there is a very beautiful courtyard with carved benches (Red Avenue, 50). Here and there are themed bars, small cafes and cutting-edge restaurants.

  • MUSEUM OF RAILWAY ENGINEERING

The Novosibirsk Museum of Railway Engineering named after Nikolai Arkhipovich Akulinin opened in August 2000. Real trains and wagons from the middle of the 19th century to the present day are exhibited on its territory. Moreover, visitors can examine the railway equipment not only from the outside, but also look into the operating car of the times of the
Great Patriotic War or visit the imperial compartment. Today the Novosibirsk Railway Museum is the largest museum of this specialization beyond the Urals. The idea of opening a museum of steam locomotives and railway equipment in Novosibirsk appeared in 1996, when a lot of decommissioned cars and special vehicles accumulated around the city.
The collection and restoration of exhibits began in 1998, and in 2000, by the day of the railwayman, the museum was officially opened for visitors. Currently, the museum collection
has more than 100 exhibits and is replenished annually with new ones.
