Vladivostok

Overview

The city’s name in Old Russian means: “Rule the East”. Seaport and administrative center of Primorsky Krai (region), extreme southeastern Russia. The town was founded in 1860 as a Russian military outpost.

During World War I, Vladivostok was the chief Pacific entry port for military supplies and railway equipment sent to Russia from the United States. It became the main Russian port on the Pacific Ocean in 1873 and received city status in 1880. With a population of about 700,000, it is today the capital of Primorye – the Maritime Territory of the Russian Far East – and home to the Russian Pacific Fleet. Thanks to its advantageous location near China, Korea, and Japan, Vladivostok early on became a center of international trade, diplomacy, and cooperative business ventures.
Vladivostok is the largest historical center of Primorsky Krai. There are more than two hundred monuments. Buildings of the late XIX and the early XX century adjoin buildings constructed at the end of the XX century. Monuments of Russian wooden architecture of the end of the XIX century can also be seen.

  • EAGLE’S NEST HILL

Eagle’s Nest is Vladivostok’s most famous viewpoint, popular with both locals and visitors. This place is also the city’s highest point, with a unique history. The peak was originally
named Mount Klykov after the prominent explorer of Russia’s Far East. The name ‘Eagle’s Nest’ is a reference to the main episode of the Russo-Turkish war, the defense of the
Shipka Pass. The viewpoint offers a magnificent view of the Golden Horn Bay, particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

  • THE OLD FORTRESS

This complex of unique fortifications is rightfully considered one of the most powerful coastal fortresses in the world. The Vladivostok Fortress is a giant compound that includes numerous facilities and units. They are scattered over a vast territory, from the suburbs of Vladivostok to the islands of the Peter the Great Bay. The ‘Vladivostok Fortress’ Museum
is located on the beautiful and busy Sportivnaya Embankment. The collection comprises photographs, plans, models and items related to the coastal defense and fortification of
Vladivostok. The collection’s historic value is recognized in Russia and abroad.

  • RUSSKY ISLAND

Inimitable nature of Primorye, blue sea, picturesque bays, majestic coastal rocks, wonderful beaches and a number of unique fortifications – all these are gathered on the Russky Island, the biggest one in the Peter the Great Gulf and the nearest one to the Vladivostok mainland. It is separated from the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, on whose hills the
city stands, by the Eastern Bosporhus straight. The island has several good sights: the FEFU campus with a promenade, the Primorsky Oceanarium, the Novik recreation center,
beaches and the remains of numerous fortifications of the Vladivostok military fortress. Here you will find plenty of opportunities for recreation: indulge yourself on its cozy beaches, arrange picnics on the seashore, fish or dive.

  • SUBMARINE C-56

The С-56 submarine was on watch during the World War II and is considered the USSR’s most efficient submarine of the time. The boat made 8 raids and launched 12 torpedo attacks in just one and a half years, destroying 14 enemy ships. In 1975, the C-56 was turned into a museum. Here, visitors can experience the atmosphere of this unusual place, climb
through authentic hatches dividing the boat’s sections, look into the periscope and sit on a sailor’s bunk.
