St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The church itself is an architectural marvel. Built by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand to be the main church of the Russian Empire, the cathedral was under construction for 40 years (1818-1858), and was decorated in the most elaborate way possible. The dome is gilded with 100 kilograms of gold. And St. Isaac’s is ranked as number one in the world for the richness of its interior decoration. It just should be looked at.

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. This marvelous Russian-style church was built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in March 1881. The Cathedral of the Savior on Spilled Blood attracts people with its five onion-domes exuberantly decorated and covered with jeweler’s enamel. Its peculiar multicolored exterior makes the church stand out from St. Petersburg’s typically strict architectural proportions and color combinations.

Kronstadt tour. Kronstadt is an unusual suburb of St. Petersburg. Located on the island of Kotlin in the Gulf of Finland, the city throughout its history served as the sea shield of St. Petersburg and the capital of the Baltic Fleet of Russia. It was here that the world’s first icebreaker was built. Kronstadt is simply fascinating. Subtle atmosphere of the port city, strict canal lines, the magnificent Naval Cathedral. Most recently, Kronstadt could be reached only with a special pass, today it is one of the most beautiful historical districts of St. Petersburg, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Kronshtadt has a lot in common with St. Petersburg: the Admiralty, the Summer Garden, the Gostiny Dvor, the Blue and Green bridges, and even its own cannon that gives a mid-day shot.

      Free time for lunch

The Cruiser Aurora. The historical ship Aurora has been turned into a museum and is docked just a few hundred yards upstream from the Cabin of Peter the Great, opposite the “St Petersburg” Hotel. The cruiser, built in St. Petersburg between 1897 and 1900, took an active part in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and participated in the Tsusima battle, in which most of Russia’s Pacific fleet was destroyed. After the war the ship was used for personnel training and during the October revolution of 1917 gave the signal (by firing a blank shot) to storm of the Winter Palace, which was being used as a residence by the democratic, but largely ineffective Provisional Government.
