Ekaterinburg

Overview

Ekaterinburg city, capital of its region, East European Russia, in the eastern foothills of the central Urals, on the Iset River. One of the largest cities of the Urals, it is an air and rail junction (a western terminus of the Trans-Siberian RR) and a leading industrial, scientific, and cultural center.

The town was founded in 1721 by Catherine the Great as a fort and metallurgical factory, its position having been chosen for its strategic proximity to the great mining operations of the Urals and Siberia. Although there are few tourist sites here other than the 18th-century cathedral, the city is nonetheless of great historical interest. It was here, in the Ipatiev’s house, after 78 days imprisonment the last Russian Tsar Nikolas II and his family were brutally executed at midnight on July 17, 1918. Although the house no longer exists, a plain wooden cross marks its site. The Imperial family, like most tourists, was brought to Ekaterinburg on the Trans- Siberian railway. The city’s educational and cultural institutions include the Urals branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, several mining schools, and a meteorological observatory.

  • THE CHURCH ON THE BLOOD

Built on the site of Ipatiev’s house, the church is a reminder of one of the most tragic and bloody pages of Russia’s history. After the February Revolution of 1917, Tsar Nikolas II abdicated the throne and was imprisoned before being moved with his family to Yekaterinburg. Here, the family lived in Ipatiev’s house for 78 days until their execution in the basement of the house. The house was demolished in 1977 under the order of the Soviet government, but construction of the church did not start until 2000, after the Russian Orthodox Church canonized Nikolas II and his family. In the lower level of the church there is a room said to have been constructed on the site where the tragic events happened, with the altar located at the exact place of execution, although some historians argue that the church was built slightly away from the site of the actual execution.
